World info: More or less consistent with the Pokemon world as presented in the main video games, supplemented by some minor headcanons (like what movies exist) and material found in other Pokemon-related works. I treat the mainline games, anime, manga, etc. as all different universes.
My general assumption is that apart from the remakes, the games tend to have their tech level/culture coincide with what year they came out in. So, for instance, SwSh would have 2019/2020 level tech at least along with its pop culture and stuff.
Marla herself does not personally know (nor is she related to) any canon characters, although she may recognize certain canon characters due to having seen them on TV or something. (Most elite four members/powerful gym leaders/champions seem to be equivalent to professional athletes in this world)
Either way, the highest level of interaction she's had with them was that maybe she liked a social media post they made once.
History: Marla was born in Unova, a region of the Pokemon world that's basically all of New York and probably parts of New Jersey. Her father was originally from Sinnoh (a region akin to the Hokkaido region of Japan), but that's neither here nor there and doesn't have too much bearing on the plot.
Marla had a pretty uneventful childhood by Pokemon world standards (by a certain definition), as she grew up with her two parents, her younger sister. and two older half-siblings. She was also born with a mild to moderate bone disease that left her unable to explore the entire region to the same extent a lot of other kids would, so she mostly stayed in school. Marla doesn’t have too many complexes over her disability, and is honestly more self-conscious and salty when people make judgments on her over it than she is about the condition itself - which she just views in a “yeah it sucks, but what are you gonna do” kind of way.
After finishing high school, she received a scholarship to study abroad in Kalos. She had also built up a modest following on the Internet for streaming gaming-related stuff, but wasn't super popular prior to being swept away in RP land. After a few weeks, she received an email from her mom with some harrowing news: her maternal grandparents had been found dead.
So on her mother's request, she decided to head over to her grandparents' house with her siblings to help with funeral stuff. This started off relatively painless at first...until she started cleaning out a bedroom and found some spooky ghosts which dragged her into a blood-spattered feverdream. Most of this has to do with the fact that Marla's maternal aunt (also the biological mother of Marla's two older siblings that Marla's mother subsequently adopted) died years and years ago, only to be turned into a ghost Pokemon of some sort and in the middle of an existential crisis. She told her younger biological sister about this, and they spent the next couple of weeks bonding with the ghost while keeping it a secret from the rest of the family. After going through some more old stuff and finding some damning testimony from the ghost, they found out something really strange: apparently their two older siblings were actually the ghost's biological kids, who their mom had claimed were her own for unknown reasons. Horribly confused and feeling just slightly betrayed, Marla had decided to ask her mom about this, which is where she gets transported to multiversal chaos a la CRAU.
BOY HOWDY, this is depressing, but one fact remains as I write this app: Marla is someone who had a happy childhood and a loving family that she more or less had healthy relationships with...only for all of that to be cruelly torn away from her once she got thrusted into panfandom RP. Without her support network to fall back on, her tendency towards depression has gotten notably more pronounced, even as she insists that she’s just fine, don’t worry about it.
Things are kind of boring on the CRAU front for both Cosmographia and Demeleier, mostly because I apped into both games as they were experiencing a bit of a downturn. Demeleier closed a mere three months after Marla was accepted, but the few months she spent there taught her to be more self-sufficient: she went from being an ordinary teenager with no idea how to do shit to one who was still maybe flailing around and sucking at life, but who had more of a drive to do things herself and more resourcefulness when it came to things like building shit. During this time she, being about 16, was still fairly naive, and promptly found her formerly trusting nature crushed to dust as she had to deal with the fact that fairies lie and trick people all the time. She’s still a little salty and on edge because of it, and has a marked disdain for all fey creatures. This is even though she's kind of fey-capricious herself.
In Cosmographia, this self-sufficiency grew even more as she was asked to deal with obstacles on her own. The addition of actual powers, for the first time, has made her a bit more confident in this regard, although she’s still somewhat reluctant to do more intensive dungeon-crawling things out of a fear of biting off more than she can chew. Still, she did help take down a giant hawk and play with some babby hawk...griffin things, which she does remember fondly. Dealing with gem bullshit has also given her a fairly blase outlook on things other people would normally consider terrifying, although a lot of this is left over from the Pokemon universe she came from.
This continued on into Phantasmal Rift, where she found herself bonding with some of the Persona 5 cast, mostly due to the fact that one of them knew a canonmate of hers from previous CRAU. She started to come out of her formerly cagey shell that had formed from CRAU in these past few years, made some friends, and even tried to date a succubus? Without really knowing what a succubus was.
Canon point: After readjusting to being back in her home world after being on a wild panfandom RP ride. In the gaps in between, her family mostly knows her as having gone to college and built up an Internet following for videos/weird shit.
In the meantime, we're brought up to SwSh on the canon timeline.
Age: Approximately 20 years old
Personality: To put it simply: Marla at the time of her departure was a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in the irreverent husk of an ordinary teenager. She has a tendency to speak her mind about matters, even if doing so will benefit absolutely no one (including herself), but especially if doing so will lead to an incredibly chaotic, disastrous, and interesting outcome. She's actually fairly intelligent for her age, but it's the type of intelligence where someone knows damn well they can be using their genius to cure cancer and instead turns right around to turn people into dinosaurs. Marla generally doesn't have any actual desire to hurt people and under most circumstances will curb any impulses she has that she knows can harm others, and tries to, for the most part, be supportive of her friends, family, and other people she considers important to her. Any attempt to call her "good", however, is kind of misleading. Even before CRAU took its toll, she was more chaotic neutral than anything.
Her naturally rude, hyper-casual, and abrasive way of dealing with people also usually doesn’t have any ulterior motives behind it, but she’ll kick it up a notch when dealing with people she doesn’t like. It’s like a cloak of armor, defending her from the stings of the outside world by making everyone pass her off as an irreverent schlub so that she doesn’t have to deal with them on a deeper level unless she puts forth a little more effort.
Despite being a sort of fey-whimsical that's utterly terrifying at even the best of times, Marla has a soft spot for animals and kids that’s wrapped under a thousand layers of stupid. With kids, this is usually disastrous, as she's the weird aunt that teaches little kids to say "fuck". With animals, this fares a lot better, given the fact that she comes from the Pokemon universe. Marla has a natural affinity for animals and monsters of all stripes. She's also a highly creative and excitable little nerd at heart, with a penchant for arts and crafts and weird performance stuff. This is exemplified with her career as a fledgling Let's Player at home, as well as her secret love for Pokemon musicals. She's often undertaking some sort of artsy side project or other, whether that's making weird videos, making weird plushies, building a haunted house for a festival, and so on. There doesn't seem to be any real direction to them, so we can only assume it's either part of her nature or she does it to alleviate boredom.
Character changes: The most significant psychological change is that she's fallen into a deep depression that sort of ebbs and flows, due to being separated from her home and family. This is probably going to subside a bit as she gets settled back into her home world but still has access to people who've been through Weird Shit through panfandom nonsense.
Capabilities: -Is friends with many Pokemon
-Has the ability to briefly stun enemies for a couple of minutes, but it has a range of "touch" and has a cooldown period of 10 minutes. -A limited amount of telekinesis. It only really functions with objects that she can see within a sorta close range (so basically in the same room or same general area), and can only really pick up things under 10 pounds. -Can shapeshift. Can hold a form more or less indefinitely if it's a humanoid that's neither too large nor too small (so between 3 and 8 feet), but has to work to maintain form if it's an animal, something really alien, or a Pokemon. Basically, the more human-ish a form is, the longer she can maintain it; she can stay as an elf for days, but not a krogan. -Has the ability to transmute objects into other objects, as long as the end result isn't any larger than herself and she has all the raw materials. -Can generate 1-5 Pokemon shaped plushies per day that create small (1 foot radius) explosions of confetti and firecracker madness when thrown upon impact. -Has gem abilities tied to her physical form; if you powercap her I’d like to at least keep these. Basically, if her physical body takes too much damage, she can go retreat into her gem to reform herself (and decide on a new “default” appearance as she’s doing this). She dies if her gem breaks.
